Hargreaves Cast Iron Traditional Express Installation Guidance

Pre Installation Guidlines

Hargreaves Traditional Express Cast Iron sockets, both plain and eared are designed for use only with Traditional Express cast iron pipes and fittings. Each fitting should allow for at least one eared socket to enable the system to be anchored securely to the building.

Installation of cast iron soil stacks should begin from bottom to top, typically with a length of pipe, boss pipe or branch at the base of the soil stack. The first cast iron soil pipe / fitting requires an eared socket fitted to the top to ensure stability and security of the pipe work and should be connected directly into the underground drainage system to ensure a secure base. Following pipes/fittings installed vertically above this point require at least one eared socket, on branches we advise using a plain socket to maintain the traditional cast iron soil stack appearence. The assembled joint is designed to be a tight fit to ensure compliance with a pressure test and long life performance.

How to Install Hargreaves Cast Iron Traditional Express Soil System

When installing Traditional Express Cast Iron Soil it is essential for the gasket and corresponding pipe / fitting to be lubricated to ensure correct insertion of pipe / fitting.

1-Apply a small amount of lubricant (TX0001) to the rubber gaskets at both ends of the push fit socket. This is necessary to ensure the insertion of pipes and fittings into the socket.

2-After lubricating both pipe and gasket push the socket over the end of pipe ensuring pipe end is fully inserted and abutting the central register in the socket.

3-If it is a eared socket, securely fix to wall using corrosion re-sistant coach screws (R0005) or similar.

4-Push the next pipe or fitting into the socket check-ing that it is fully inserted and abutting the central register. Repeat the above process on remaining joints until the stack is completed.

5-When cutting into an existing cast iron soil system a slip socket with ears should be used (TX4016SE). This has no central register and allows the socket to be slipped onto the existing pipe up to the second gasket before placing the new fitting in position.

6-Slide the eared socket into the correct position where the respective gaskets make a seal on the pipe/ fitting on either side of the joint.

The assembled joint is designed to be a tight fit to ensure compliance with a pressure test and long life performance.

Applicable standards and codes of practice
